Distance measurement: methods, accuracy and the right tool
Measuring distances is part of every building site and every renovation. But not every method suits every task. Choose the wrong tool and you measure inaccurately or lose time. This guide shows which method is suitable when and what matters when buying a tool.

Distance measuring methods compared
| Method | Accuracy | Range | Benefits | Disadvantages |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tape measure | ±1–2 mm | up to 50 m | inexpensive, no battery | two people needed, reading errors |
| Laser distance meters | ±1–3 mm | 15–300 m | one person, fast, calculates area/volume | needs a target surface |
| Ultrasonic distance meter | ±10–30 mm | up to 15 m | inexpensive | inaccurate, errors on uneven surfaces |
| Total station / tachymeter | ±0.1–1 mm | up to 3 km | highest precision | expensive, for geodesy |
For most practical trade work, the laser distance meter is the tool of choice.
How does a laser distance meter work?
The tool emits a pulsed laser beam, which is reflected by the target surface and returns. From the travel time of the light, the tool calculates the distance – in milliseconds. Modern tools calculate directly: area, volume, Pythagoras function, gradient measurement.
When does a laser distance meter make sense?
Measuring alone
With a tape measure, you need a second person for distances over 3–4 m. A laser distance meter measures on its own – even over 50 metres, in one second.
Fast room survey
Measuring 60 m² with niches and ceiling height: 20–30 minutes with a tape measure, 5–10 minutes with a laser.
Hard-to-reach dimensions
Ceiling height, shaft depth, distance to an element that cannot be touched – the laser measures in seconds.
What to look for when buying
- Range: For typical interior work, 40–60 m is enough. Large halls or outdoors: 100–200 m.
- Accuracy: ±1–3 mm is enough for all trade tasks.
- Bluetooth: transfer measurements directly to an app. Saves rework and prevents transcription errors.
- Size: compact tools (under 130 mm) fit in your trouser pocket and get used every day.
Recommendations from the CONDTROL range
- CONDTROL Smart 50 Plus – up to 50 m, area and volume, €59.90. For DIYers and occasional users.
- CONDTROL Smart 40 Lite – 40 m, particularly compact housing, everyday use, €49.90.
- CONDTROL Vector 80 – 80 m, Bluetooth, extended measuring menu, €130.
Frequently asked questions
How accurately does a laser distance meter really measure?
In practice to ±1–2 mm with a good target surface. Completely sufficient for trade applications.
Does it also work outdoors?
In bright sunlight the laser dot is hard to see. A target plate improves measurability considerably.
What is the Pythagoras function?
The tool measures two sides of a right-angled triangle and calculates the third – for example the height of a building, without having to stand directly underneath it.
Can it replace the tape measure?
For most applications, yes – especially for distances over 3 m and when surveying rooms. The tape measure still makes sense when cutting materials.
