Buying a rotary laser: what do I need it for – and what matters?
A rotary laser looks like a cross-line laser but works completely differently — and for different tasks. When areas get large, distances grow and daylight makes lines invisible, the rotary laser is the right tool.

What is a rotary laser?
A rotary laser creates a complete horizontal plane from a single laser beam by rotating the beam 360° with a motor. The result: a precise reference plane with a working range of up to 800 metres in diameter, which can be detected with a compatible receiver even in daylight.
Rotary laser vs. cross-line laser: who needs what?
| Cross-line laser | Rotary laser | |
|---|---|---|
| Working area | Interior fit-out, rooms | Large areas, outdoors |
| Range | 15–25 m (without receiver) | 50–600 m (with receiver) |
| Use in daylight | limited | yes (with receiver) |
| Number of lines | 2–4 simultaneous lines | 1 rotating plane |
| Price | from €65 | from €699.90 |
Typical applications
- Shell construction: setting floor slabs and ceilings to height, transferring masonry heights
- Screed work: bringing large areas to the same height, defining slopes
- Civil engineering: measuring slopes over long distances, checking pipe gradients
- Landscaping: terrain modelling, drainage planning, terrace construction
- Large halls: checking floor flatness, aligning machines to height
Buying criteria: what matters
- H or HV: purely horizontal is enough for most height work. HV additionally allows vertical rotation for setting out.
- Range: 300–600 m for building construction and landscaping, 600 m+ for large projects.
- Accuracy: ±0.05–0.1 mm/m — more than sufficient for all construction applications.
- Protection class: IP66 minimum for outdoor use — complete protection against dust and water jets.
- Remote control: saves considerable time on large areas.
CONDTROL rotary lasers
- CONDTROL Roto HVG 600 — €699.90. Green laser, 600 m diameter with receiver, ±0.05 mm/m, slope ±10 % in X/Y, IP66, brushless motor. For shell construction, screed, landscaping.
- CONDTROL Roto HVG 800 — €999.90. Like the HVG 600, but 800 m diameter, up to 1,500 rpm and remote control up to 300 m. For large areas and long routes.
- CONDTROL Digi Roto HVG 800 — €1,749.90. Digital slope in both axes, ±0.025 mm/m, up to 3,000 rpm, 30 hours of run time, metal housing. For slopes in road construction and civil engineering.
Basic equipment
- Laser receiver — included with all three models, for use in daylight
- Flexi Staff Green levelling staff with receiver holder
- GEO tripod for stable positioning
Frequently asked questions
Can I also use the rotary laser indoors?
Technically yes, but it is not optimised for it. For interior fit-out, the cross-line laser remains the right tool.
How far does the rotary laser really reach?
The stated range applies with a receiver under normal conditions. In practice, 300–500 m outdoors are realistic.
Is the investment worthwhile?
For companies that regularly work on large areas or outdoors, yes. Working hours saved through precise setting out pay for the device over its service life.
